Going on a Walkabout

IMG_5353 {Wow!  It’s been awhile! Apologies for the long absence since I last wrote a blog post. I’m happy to report it’s been a hectic, but fulfilling spring! In any case, I’m back!:)

This week I have the privilege of teaching in our Proverbs 31 Online Bible Study.  Thanks to the encouragement of Chapter 8 in Limitless Life by Derwin L. Gray, I set out on a prayer walk this week.

No big agenda.

No special itinerary.

Just my running shoes and some e-mailed prayer requests from friends. Oh, and I invited the God of the Universe to join me. {That was a pretty key part of my morning!}

It had been far too long since I walked around my kids’ school and our downtown area and simply prayed.

There was a definite part of me that wanted to skip out on prayer altogether. After all, it might rain?! And though I’d invited a couple of my prayer partners, none of them could join me.

Then there was another part of me that wanted to skip past any kind of praises and thanksgiving, and zoom straight to the requests on my heart.

But I’m thankful to say by God’s grace, the Holy Spirit prompted me to at least begin with some humble adoration. Confession. Thanksgiving. And then move on to the chance to really ask God to jump into a multitude of situations.IMG_5371

It was a beautiful morning, about 90 minutes after sunrise. My town has a picturesque Riverwalk and it was so nice to enjoy the simple beauty of water cascading downstream, with ducks practicing their takeoffs and landings on webbed feet.

As I headed toward the Riverwalk I saw kids riding bicycles, en route to morning swim practices.

I saw runners running, and dog-walkers walking. Commuters commuting, and construction workers constructing.

I even saw two of my daughter’s teachers, which prompted me to pray for them.

For the most part, though, my morning was a time of simple solitude between me and the God of the universe, giving me time to thank Him for an abundance of blessings, and ask for wisdom and direction in my meager attempts to live a purpose-driven life.

I was convicted that in all the years I’ve lived in this town, I think I’ve only walked along the Riverwalk specifically to pray one other time. Ouch.

It’s been far too long! I’m so sorry, Lord!

But thankfully, God didn’t mind.

IMG_5356He was still delighted to see me.

After all, as our OBS verse of the week Zephaniah 3:17b says,

“He will take delight in you with gladness.
With his love, he will calm all your fears.
He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”

Indeed! God was thrilled to see me, and I’m happy to say, I can’t wait to head back and spend some sweet communion with Him again, in the VERY near future!

Steph, this is absolutely beautiful! What a beautiful place you have to walk & to make it a prayer walk…..how awesome! I often pray when I’m walking/jogging when I feel led to. Like our church just hired a children’s pastor & he was trying to get a house that was in my town but was just priced to high for him. I happen to be walking one night & as I walked past this house I felt led to stop & pray so I did. Found out later not only did he get this house but all he has to pay is the utilities. Wow, God is so good! Thank you so much for sharing your walk with us!

So special, Tonya! What an excellent prayer warrior!

I’ve gone on walks to exercise where I’ve prayed quite a bit. But to specifically go to pray … while walking … that discipline had been sorely lacking for me. Grateful for this reminder this week!
